| It all started as a hobby..
.. in 1996, I was having my vodka in this trendy bar (.. it was a bar back then) in Istanbul/Turkey called "The 5th Floor", when the owner of the bar asked me if I'd be interested in DJ'ing. I had no experience at all, except some home parties, but I said "Yes, why not?".
Things have never been the same since then..
I thought it'd only be a small fun thingy to be the DJ at 5th Floor, but then I started getting offers - I passed over to Neo Bar and DJ'd there for 8 months. In 1998, I started playing at Barbahçe. I never thought playing at these famous GLBT bars would be possible, and I never focused on DJ'ing that much. But then I realized things were getting serious - I started playing at the monthly parties of the GLBT organization in Istanbul, called Lambdaistanbul to help them raise money. These parties used to take place in different venues every other month, and they helped me to get my first public attention. The most important thing in my DJ'ing career was when I Ceylan Caplı, owner of the legendary 2 big clubs of Istanbul namely Fourteen and Twenty asked me to start playing at the best-ever GLBT club (Fourteen). I had 2 years weekend residency and great success at Fourteen. When Fourteen was closed and merged with Twenty, I became the weekend resident of this huge club. This was the period when I spinned off turntables and playing mostly tribal house.
After a year of playing at Twenty (to was just renamed to Club 2C), I got this offer from a venue which has became a legend in its first year: An open-air GLBT club which is set by the beautiful bosphorus, filled with ~1,000 people. Douche Club! 3 years of DJ'ing by the sea, in open air.. So incredible, so hard to describe!
Douche Club was renamed to Be Club and moved places. For 6 years in a row, I have been the unchanged Saturday night resident DJ at Be Club till May 2007. After the glorious 6 years, I decided that it was time to make a change. June 2007 is the date where I have changed clubs and started playing at Barbahçe, the club where I was playing around 9 years ago. A smaller venue, but surely a nice one with a very nice crowd.
And finally on January 2009, I have started spinning at Love Dance Point, one of the milestone-clubs in Istanbul. I have been DJ'ing on Friday nights only, and guess Friday nights have never been so fun, so crowded, so great. The crowd is very nice, totally reactive to what I'm playing, and its been a real treat to be playing at Love Dance Point. If you wanna drop by when you come around Istanbul, just add me as a friend in Facebook (you can find the link in "downloads" section) and you can learn about my DJ'ing dates.
I am right now doing a radio show, totally amateurish, for a web site in Turkey. This thing is pretty exciting because all these years that I have DJ'd, I never used my voice to present anything. As the project is amateur, I record the whole show and present them at my home. This show is available in the Turkish part of my website only, as I thought you all non-Turkish speaking people would be quite bored of the announcements throughout the show. BUT! Ofcourse you were in my mind, so I decided to put a version of this show, without the announcements, like a proper set. You can find each episode without announcements in the download section now.
In all these years, I have played at numerous private and big parties. I became the first Turkish DJ to play at the famous Salvation parties, the first Turkish DJ to spin at Tolerated series.I have organized and DJ'd the official release party of Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" album with Warner Bros Turkey. Also organized and DJ'd in the Brokeback Mountain premiere party. In Summer 2006, I was the only Turkish DJ to spin at Alternative Holidays Bodrum event, along with 14 other DJ's from leading British GLBT Clubs like Crash, Nightingale, Megawoof and White Party
I'm DJ'ing only for hobby and I'm hoping that I'll continue cheering up the crowds as long as I'm also cheering up in the DJ booth. Thank you to all those who have given me feedbacks and negative/positive reactions all these years I have DJ'd. |
